Assisted Living Checklist

You’ve searched SeniorLiving.Net’s website for assisted living communities near you. You’ve called your local Care Advisor to help you narrow down the thousands of assisted living residence choices. Your Care Advisor has set up tours at a few assisted living residences for you to go visit. Now what?

Print this checklist and bring it with you when you visit the assisted living communities to make sure you don’t forget anything and to help you make the final decision.

Location:

The location of the community is convenient
The neighborhood is safe and free of crime
There is a hospital close by to the community
There is a physician onsite
There are shopping centers and restaurants nearby

Assisted Living Building:

The building was clean and well maintained
The community was handicap-accessible (doorways, sidewalks, bathrooms, hallways and rooms)
There are handrails in the doors and bathroom
The apartment units are close to all the common areas in the community

Safety:

There are locks on all of the exterior doors, and visitors are monitored
There are smoke alarms and sprinklers in the common areas as well as in the individual units
There is a doctor on staff or on call 24-hours a day
There is an emergency response system throughout the community

Services & Amenities:

There is a nurse onsite 24hours a day, or on call
Residents are able to age in place
Assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) is provided (bathing, dressing, eating)
Meals are included in the monthly rent
Utilities are included in the monthly rent
Laundry and housekeeping is included in the monthly rent
Swimming pool
Fitness room/Gym
Daily activities are planned for the residents
Transportation is available to the residents (shopping/doctors appointments)

Dining Services:

Meals are prepared fresh, onsite
There is a dietician and chef that plans the menu
3 meals are served a day
Snacks are available all day for residents
Vegetarian options or other special dietary needs are accommodated

Does the community offer support group meetings for families of the resident?
